Functional Trainers Buying Guide

Functional trainers are very popular in both commercial and home gyms. Not only are they incredibly versatile, but they also don’t take up a huge amount of space.

But what should you consider when you buy a functional trainer? What are the main factors to look at to make sure you make the right decision choice? Here, we take a closer look at everything you need to know.

Why Buy a Functional Trainer?

A functional trainer allows you to carry out a wide range of exercises and movements to work different parts of your body. The name comes from the fact that you can use it to simulate functional training, allowing you to move your body in natural ways.

As well as being incredibly versatile, these machines make good use of space, you can use them for isolation exercises, they are safe to use, and they are cost-effective because you get a lot for your money and they tend to last a long time.

Read on for the main factors to consider when choosing your functional trainer.

Weight Stacks

Functional trainers usually come with either one or two weight stacks. Models with dual-weight stacks are better because two people can use them at the same time and they also help with imbalances and increase unilateral strength.

But it depends on how you want to use your functional trainer. If you will be using it alone at home, a model with a single-weight stack will usually be cheaper and may therefore be preferable.

You should also find out the maximum weight that can be used in the weight stacks. This is usually somewhere around 150 lbs for each stack, but it is more in some functional trainers.

You need to make sure the maximum weight is enough for your needs, but you may be able to upgrade the weights later on if you need to.

Functions

Different functional trainers come with different functions. Some of the most important include the following:

  • Pull-up bar – This bar is used for pull-ups and chin-ups. Most functional trainers have these, but some also have them at different angles, which is even better.
  • Smith bar – Some models have one of these built-in. This is a barbell on rods, which means it can only go directly up and down.
  • Pulleys – There are usually two pulleys, and they can often be adjusted for height. However, some models have extra pulleys like a low pulley for seated rows or a high pulley for pulldown exercises.

Choose a functional trainer that has all the functions that you will need. If you are getting a functional trainer for your commercial gym, you will probably want it to come with more functions.

Size

Functional trainers are quite large, at least compared to some of your other gym equipment. You should therefore make sure that the model you choose fits the space you have available in your gym or home.

Some are larger than others, and larger models often come with more features. If you get a smaller one, you may miss out on some features. But if there is a maximum size limit due to the space available, you will need to factor this into your decision.

Height is also a factor, but it’s more of an issue in a home gym where there are lower ceilings. Make sure you get one that fits your space, and you will want some space above it as well, about 30 cm or so, for pull-ups.

Quality & Durability

This is one of the major factors. If you are buying a functional trainer for your home gym, it is a large investment, and you want it to last. A high-quality machine will last you many years, and functional trainers for commercial gyms should be very solid because they will get even more use.

This means your functional trainer should be made using high-quality metals like steel and iron, which can put up with a lot more. They should also have solid weight stacks and durable pulleys. Things like sealed bearing pulleys are great because they are smoother and more responsive.

Brand

If you want a high-quality functional trainer, you should choose one from a top brand. This is one of the easiest ways to make sure you get a machine that will last you many years.

Some brands have a much longer history and a great reputation. They are regularly chosen by top athletes and commercial gyms because they know they will last.

We only sell the top brands at Pinnacle Fitness. This means brands that have proven themselves over the years like Life Fitness, Pulse Fitness, Star Trac and Technogym.

You may be tempted to choose a cheaper model from a brand without a great reputation, but it will still be a large investment and you may end up having to fix it or even get a new one. A good functional trainer should last many years and be a pleasure to use, which is important if you want to keep your gym customers happy.

Cable Attachments

Cable attachments are the things that connect to the carabiners. Ideally, your functional trainer should have the attachments you need. But this is not a major factor because you can buy these attachments separately.

Some of the attachments you may find useful include D-handles, EZ bars, triceps ropes and lat pulldown bars.

New or Used

Whether you buy a new or second-hand model comes down to personal preference, but it is an important consideration. Buying a refurbished functional trainer can be an excellent way to save money.

Because of the high quality of these machines, they are designed to last for many years. You could get a much better used functional trainer for your home gym for the same price as you would pay for an average one that you buy new.

Again, make sure you choose a good brand. The best brands make machines that last for years, so you can get a lot of use out of your functional trainer even if it is refurbished.

Appearance

Appearance is one of the least important factors, but it is still a consideration. You should enjoy having it in your home or gym, after all. Most functional trainers look fairly similar, but there are different models and colours to choose from.

Some of the better models look more impressive because they have better finishes and are made to a higher standard, creating a high-end look. The weight stack shrouds are important, so look for full shrouds that cover the sides on both the inside and outside. But it all comes down to personal preference.

Budget

Finally, your budget is obviously a major factor. If you have a maximum amount you can spend, you can’t go beyond that, but we would say that you should always get the best that you can afford, which means choosing a model at the upper end of your budget.

Some functional trainers are cheaper, but you tend to get what you pay for. If you are a complete beginner, you could go for a less expensive model. But if you want a functional trainer that not only lasts many years but is also a pleasure to use, aim to spend as much as you can realistically afford.

That doesn’t mean you have to spend many thousands of pounds. We have a wide range of functional trainers at Pinnacle Fitness starting at just over £1,000, so browse the collection today to see what’s available.

Conclusion

Functional trainers are versatile items of equipment that are popular in both home and commercial gyms. Choosing the best functional trainer for your needs is something you should spend some time over because they are one of the larger investments you will make, and you want to make sure you make the right decision.
