Guide to Buying a Treadmill

Are you planning to buy a new treadmill? Great decision! Treadmills have long been one of the most popular items of fitness equipment in the gym and many people use them at home too. For anyone who wants to go walking, jogging or running without having to actually go outside, they provide a convenient option.

We have a huge range of treadmills available at Pinnacle Fitness. But how should you choose yours? In this treadmill buyer guide, we’ll look at some of the main factors to consider.

Why Should You Buy a Treadmill?

Treadmills are popular for many reasons. They are a great way to boost cardiovascular health, which provides additional benefits to your overall health and mood.

Essentially, they provide a convenient way to enjoy running or walking without having to go outside. Perhaps the weather is bad or you want to fit a quick 10-minute run into your workout, and leaving the gym is not convenient. A treadmill is a great alternative.

They also come with lots of features that help you get the most out of your workout, like calorie counters, timers and more, which we will take a closer look at later on.

But what about when it comes to choosing your model? There are lots of factors to keep in mind, and we cover them all in this guide.

Choosing a Treadmill: Key Factors to Consider

Buying a treadmill is not always straightforward. It’s not simply a matter of picking out the model that looks the best, and there are lots of factors you need to consider first.

Here are some of the most important to ensure you find the right treadmill for you or your gym members.

Where Will the Treadmill Be Used?

The most important question to ask yourself is where you will use the treadmill. Will it be used by you and your family members at home? Or do you want a treadmill for your commercial gym where it will be used by many different people?

This makes a big difference. With a treadmill for your own personal use, you could get a smaller, more affordable model that is perfect for your specific needs.

With a commercial treadmill, different users will have different sizes, weights, styles of running and more, and you will want a treadmill that can meet lots of different requirements.

Amount of Space Available

Treadmills tend to be quite large, at least compared to some other gym equipment, but some are bigger than others. The amount of space available is, therefore, an important consideration.

If you have a small home gym, you will probably want a smaller model. If you have a large commercial gym, size will be less of a concern.

Another option is to buy a foldable treadmill. After being used, these fold down to save space, and this may be a more convenient option for you.

Motor and Speed

The motor is one of the most important parts of the treadmill, and it can have a big impact on how the treadmill is used. It powers the treadmill and it is usually measured in horsepower (HP).

The motor used in the treadmill affects its speed range. A good motor should be able to power a speed of up to about 15 mph, and this should be enough for even the fastest users. Even a maximum speed of 10 mph is often enough for most purposes.

If you are buying a treadmill for a commercial gym, it’s a good idea to go with a powerful motor. People will use it very regularly, and some of them will want to run fast.

Keep in mind that if you use the motor at full capacity, and on a regular basis, it will typically not last as long. So, you might want to get a treadmill with a motor that is more powerful than you actually need.

Shock Absorption

Shock absorption or cushioning is another factor to consider. Some people find that their knees hurt after running, and a good amount of cushioning will help to protect the joints. Treadmills tend to be a lot softer than running on concrete, but the amount of cushioning varies.

You may want to look for a treadmill with a low-impact running surface to reduce joint stress and lower the risk of injury. Some models may state that they reduce the impact by 20% or 30%, so this is worth looking at when you are choosing a treadmill.

New or Used Treadmills

Finally, an important thing to decide is whether you want a new treadmill or a used treadmill. Don’t dismiss used models without considering the options. When you buy a treadmill from a top manufacturer, you can often get it a lot cheaper and still enjoy many years of excellent performance.

Take a look at your budget. If you don’t want to spend more on a new treadmill, a second-hand model could be a great alternative. For the same price as a less powerful new model, you could buy a more powerful used model.

Physical Features

You should also consider the physical features of the treadmill. The size is an important factor if space is limited in your home or gym, but also look at the support panels. These are wider on some treadmills than on others, and they should provide enough space for the user to be comfortable before stepping onto the treadmill.

You should find out the height of the running surface. Ideally, you don’t want this to be too high, and a height of about 10 inches or less will make it more accessible.

The size of the running surface is another important factor. The larger this is, the more comfortable it is to use. However, it depends on how much space you have available.

Finally, you may find that some treadmills come with additional useful accessories like smartphone trays, cup holders and reading racks.

Safety Key

It’s often a good idea to get a treadmill that comes with a safety key. This means the treadmill stops if you fall off. You can also remove the key to prevent children from turning the treadmill on.

Most models come with a safety key, but they can attach to the treadmill differently. Some are thin cards that insert into a slot while others are magnetic.

Key Treadmill Features

Different treadmill models have a range of features. The most basic treadmills may not have many additional features, while more expensive models may come with lots.

Following are some of the most common features to look out for when choosing a treadmill.

Info Screens

Many treadmills have built-in info screens. These display information to the user while they are walking or running, allowing them to track everything from the distance they have travelled to their speed, amount of time they have been running and the calories they have burned. Some screens may only provide basic information, while some may come with more detailed information.

Some screens are larger than others, and some are touchscreens. They may also have features like headphone sockets, internet, Bluetooth and even apps like Netflix.

Heart Rate Monitor

One of the most useful features that treadmills come with is a heart rate monitor. These usually consist of pulse sensors where the user can place their hands to track their pulse. Their pulse is then displayed on the info screen.

Preset Programmes

As mentioned, some treadmills only have basic information on their info screens, but some come with preset programs. Using these, the user can set a specific programme to meet a particular goal.

These could involve programmes that focus on burning calories or increasing heart rate. Others have recovery programmes that help the user slow down and slow their heart rate following a more rigorous workout.

Incline

Some models come with an incline or elevation as well, which can form a part of the programmes. You will often see the incline stated in terms of percentage (e.g. 0-15%). Some models also have a decline, which can be about 3%.

Choose a High-Quality Brand

One thing to keep in mind is the brand. There are many treadmill brands, so try to stick to the more established brands if possible. These tend to have excellent reputations that they have built up over the years.

At Pinnacle Fitness, we only sell treadmills from top brands like Pulse Fitness, Life Fitness, Woodway, Impulse Fitness, Cybex, Technogym, Octane Fitness, and Star Trac. These all have proven reputations for making high-quality machines that last.
