Indoor Studio Bikes Buying Guide

Indoor studio bikes are a great choice for anyone who wants to exercise indoors. These bikes are typically used in special cycling classes where the activity mimics riding a bike on the road.

But how should you choose an indoor studio bike?

There are lots of considerations when it comes to buying the right model for your needs, and we look at all of these in our indoor studio bikes buying guide.

Where Will the Bike Be Used?

First of all, consider where you will be using the indoor bike. Most indoor studio bikes are used in commercial gyms, but they could also be used in a home gym. This will affect how often you will use it.

In a commercial gym, a bike will be used for many hours every day. At home, it may only get half an hour a day or less, depending on how many people are using it.

This will also affect how advanced it should be. If you want a studio bike for personal use, a simple model may be perfectly adequate. But if you want one for your commercial gym, a high-quality model that is durable and can put up with lots of usage will be needed.

Should You Buy New or Used?

If you are buying an indoor studio bike for your commercial gym, you may think that you need a new model. But the truth is that some used models can be a better decision. Used commercial bikes from top brands can last many years in great condition, and they are more affordable, so it’s well worth considering.

Other Types of Exercise Bikes

There are several different types of exercise bikes, so it’s worth knowing a bit about these in case one is more suitable for you. As well as indoor studio bikes, we sell three other types of bikes at Pinnacle Fitness:

These are different types of exercise bikes with different designs like sitting back or sitting up straight. Air bikes have a dual-action design, and the resistance is affected by how hard you work. If you would rather one of these types of bikes, you can explore our range of new and used models on our website.

What About Spin Bikes?

Spin® bikes are similar to studio bikes, but they are specifically used for Spin® classes in commercial gyms. Take a look at the models we sell and let us know if you have any questions about these.

Important Considerations

When you are choosing an indoor studio bicycle, there are a few important considerations that you will need to take into account. After you have an idea about the type of indoor studio bike you want to buy and the amount you are willing to spend, the following factors will help you make your decision.

Comfort Level

Perhaps the most important factor of all is the level of comfort provided by the bike. Sometimes you will be able to try the bike out. If not, you can read reviews online to find out more.

One of the most important features is the seat, which should not be too hard, otherwise, it can cause discomfort. Ergonomic seats are a good choice. However, you can often switch seats if you find it uncomfortable.

Pedals

The pedals should be wide enough to comfortably fit your feet and prevent them from slipping off. Ideally, the pedals should also come with straps to hold your feet in place, which will give you more confidence as you use the bike.

Adjustable Handlebars and Seat

The seat should also be adjustable so you can change the height. Most indoor studio bikes have adjustable seats, but try to choose a model that makes it easy to change the height. Ideally, it should be as easy as possible if different people are using it, even if this is just your family members.

Does it adjust horizontally too? This is useful and helps users to find the perfect position. Remember, you want to be able to get into a position that is comfortable for you.

The handlebars should also be adjustable both upwards and downwards as well as forwards and backwards. The more adjustable they are, the better.

Resistance

The resistance should be adjustable to allow you to choose how hard you work out. You may want to start with a low resistance and then increase it. This is quite basic to most bikes, but some bikes have different types of resistance like advanced magnetic resistance.

Stability

One of the main considerations when buying an exercise bike is its stability. You don’t want to buy a bike that is constantly rocking because this can make you feel less secure and affect your enjoyment of using it as well as posing a safety risk and making excess noise.

Display

All but the most basic indoor studio bikes will have a built-in display included. If not, you may be able to buy one separately.

Displays can vary widely in their quality and the information they provide. They should all have the most basic information including speed, time, watts, distance travelled and calories burnt. Some will also provide your heart rate if the handlebars have heart rate sensors.

Some displays are larger and clearer than others. The more advanced displays have video screens, classes that can be followed, pre-set programmes and more. A touchscreen will be easier to use when you are on the bike. Some also have better user interfaces and user profiles.

Some bikes may have Bluetooth connectivity so you can connect your phone, along with a headphone socket so you can listen to music without disturbing anyone.

Weight Limit

Most bikes will have an upper weight limit. Make sure you choose a bike that is suitable for you or anyone else who is using it. If you are buying a bike for your commercial gym, choose a model that has a higher weight limit.

Safety

If you have children or pets who may have access to the indoor bike, make sure it is safe. Some bikes cover up the mechanics like the chain to reduce the risk of injury. A stable and secure bike will also reduce the chances that it falls over and injures anyone.

Extra Features

There are several other features to keep in mind when you are choosing a bike. These are extras that can make a difference to your experience using the bike and can sway your decision.

Fan

Some exercise bikes come with a fan built into the model, which helps to keep you cool while working out on the bike.

Sound System

Some bikes have built-in sound systems, so you can play your music as you work out.

Style of Handlebars

There are various styles of handlebars, and it comes down to personal preference. Look at the position, material, ergonomics and more to help make your decision.

Transportation

Do you need to move the bike around much? If so, choose a model that is easier to move around. Most indoor studio bikes are quite heavy, but some come with wheels so you can move them with greater ease.

Bottle Holder

A bottle holder is a useful feature so you can keep hydrated without having to stop your workout. Some even have two bottle holders for longer rides.

Choose a Reputable Brand

Finally, make sure you choose an exercise bike from a reputable brand. Whatever style of indoor studio bike you want and whatever features you want it to include, the brand is important. A bike from a top manufacturer will last longer and provide a better experience for you and other users.

We only provide bikes from the best brands in the business here at Pinnacle Fitness like Bodymax, Life Fitness, Technogym, Matrix and Keiser. These are all trusted brands, so you know you’re making a great decision.
